Toyota readies for an intensive settlement process over sudden acceleration lawsuits

A report published by Bloomberg News on Friday, December 13 revealed that Toyota is willing to enter a settlement procedure over sudden acceleration claims involving injuries or deaths.

U.S. District Judge James Selna, who was set to handle approximately 200 federal lawsuits against the automotive maker, called for the freezing of the claims following Toyota’s request for more time to try to settle the cases. Toyota’s move stemmed from its defeat in a lawsuit heard by a Oklahoma City jury, which ruled that the company’s faulty electronic throttle control system caused sudden and unintended vehicle acceleration.

Selna stated a hearing to discuss comments about the settlement process will be made on January 14. Toyota’s settlement sessions will begin February next year.
