Defective air bags investigated by NHTSA

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating a man’s claim that a┬áside-curtain air bag deployed and dislodged a metal bracket that cut his ear in half.

The driver was in an accident last month in his 2012 Hyundai Elantra when he was injured by the air bag. In his complaint to the NHTSA, the driver warns the administration of the possible consequences had the bracket hit his neck.

A representative from Hyundai says the company has not received any other reports of injuries. The Elantra, the automaker’s second-best selling automobile, was named North American Car of the Year in January.
