Traffic fatalities increase from 2011

Statistics released from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation earlier this month show that traffic fatalities have increased from this time last last year. In February, 34 people lost their lives in 25 traffic accidents, 12 more than in February 2011 and one more than the state’s five-year average.

Total traffic-related fatalities as of the end of February is 78, including 54 drivers, 21 passengers, and three pedestrians. This is 17 more than in 2011 and seven more than the five-year average.

According to officials at the Department of Transportation, many of the deaths could have been avoided if people wore their seatbelts. Buckling up is the best way to protect yourself from being ejected from the vehicle or violently tossed around.
