Texting While Driving Law Hard to Enforce

A law that was passed to ban drivers from texting in Wisconsin has now been found to be extremely difficult to enforce. In the three months following the enacting of the law, only five people have been ticketed for driving while texting, compared to the 10,000 speeding tickets that have been issued in the same amount of time.

The law states that drivers cannot send a text while driving, however, they are allowed to read texts that are sent to them. For officers, this stipulation makes it hard to pull over drivers. Also, drivers who are ticketed have the ability to contest a ticket by saying that they were only reading a text, providing a loophole for drivers to get out of paying the ticket.

While many have expressed frustration over the wording of the law, there is still overwhelming support for the law¬†with the hope that it will change people’s behavior and prevent accidents.
