Lost furniture leads to crashes on Highway 29

The State Patrol reports that a driver who lost a load of furniture from the back of his truck Wednesday caused two crashes and hours of traffic delays.

Police are still looking for the vehicle and the driver.

Several motorists as well as the Maratho County Sheriff’s Department reported the incident to the State Patrol around 6:45 PM Wednesday. According to witnesses, that there were shards of wood and broken glass spread across the westbound lanes of Highway 29 near the Business Highway 51 exit.

A 16-person passenger van as well as a tractor-trailer both struck mattresses in the road at the same time, resulting in their two vehicles colliding. A mattress also wound  up stuck in the tractor-trailer’s drive shaft, which meant the tractor had to be towed from the scene.

A minivan behind the two vehicles had to brake sharply to avoid striking them, which then led to a truck behind the minivan crashing into it.

Nobody was injured in the two crashes.
