Driver error found to be cause behind crash

Police have closed an investigation into the cause behind a 76-year-old woman’s single-vehicle crash into the side of the Sheboygan Falls YMCA in her Toyota Camry last week.

Surveillance video has surfaced that shows the woman driving into the building at a steady rate of speed without any visible attempt to brake, as she had initially claimed. Police have been able to dismiss her claim of mechanical brake failure, which was plausible following the recent nationwide recalls of Toyota Camrys for mechanical failures.

“We are still waiting — and I stress this is not a final conclusion — but up ’til this point I feel comfortable saying our belief right now is that this is an operator issue,” Sheboygan Falls Public Safety Chief Steven Riffel said.

Thankfully no one in the parking lot or in the YMCA were injured in this single-vehicle crash. These kinds of negligent drivers can be very dangerous for pedestrians and innocent people around the crash.
