According to The New York Times, “Toyota said Wednesday that its investigation of about 2,000 vehicles reported to experience sudden acceleration found evidence that sticking accelerator pedals and interference by floor mats — the subjects of two big recalls — did indeed cause some of the incidents.”

This is the first time that Toyota has admitted any fault since they began their recalls after being inundated with complaints about sudden acceleration in their vehicles. NHTSA, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is also conducting its own investigation. Currently, they have not reached a conclusion about the complaints.

Toyota says, however, that most of the cases involving sudden acceleration can be attributed to driver error. A person mistakenly pressed the gas instead of the brake. Others are arguing against this statement. Toyota is being sued over the problems.

Auto defects can cause accidents that are not your fault, resulting in expensive damage and sometimes injuries.
Police say 19-year-old Jessica Dull was driving the 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse. The Dunn County News reports that the car was “traveling southbound on County Highway X when it became airborne, left the roadway on the right side and struck a group of trees before overturning on its top.”

The crash killed 20-year-old Jessica Hartung from Elmwood and 19-year-old Amanda Newman of Elk Mound. The driver, who was from Richland Center, also did not survive the crash. 19-year-old Samantha Turnipseed, from Richland Center, survived the crash but sustained serious injuries.

WFRV reports that 20-year-old Joseph Turppa was sentenced to serve ten months in jail after killing his best friend in a drunk driving accident. Turppa pled no contest against the reduced charges.

On the fateful evening, Turppa and his friend, Christian Laufenberg, were both in separate vehicles when Turrpa attempted to pass Laufenberg. According to WFRV, “Instead, he clipped the vehicle and his friends car went off the road, killing him.”

During today’s proceedings, Laufenberg’s parents asked the judge to be lenient. The judge was harsh, though, because Turppa confided to his parole officer that he smoked marijuana after being released from jail. WFRV writes that Turppa’s attorney said he should not be punished for his honesty.
