Drunk driver receives 4th conviction

Posted on Tuesday, January 24th, 2012 at 5:32 pm

A 37 year-old Wausau man plead guilty this week to his fourth DWI conviction after he was arrested for drunk driving and texting last October.

The man hit a squad car at a stoplight on Bridge Street when he was texting on his cellphone. The officer found empty beer cans and an uncased rifle with a bullet nearby in the front seat. Uncased bows and arrows were also found in the suspect’s back seat.

A breathalyzer test showed that his blood alcohol level was above the legal limit of 0.08, but due to his prior convictions the man cannot have a blood alcohol content over 0.04.

Traffic deaths under 600 for 4th year

Posted on Wednesday, January 4th, 2012 at 10:53 am

For four years in a row, Wisconsin traffic deaths were fewer than 600 in 2011.

Last year was the first time in 84 years that the state had seen vehicular fatalities under 600 for four years in a row; the last time being in 1924-1927. A total of 569 people were killed on Wisconsin roadways last year, seven more than in 2010 but 59 fewer than the state’s five-year average.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, bicycle, pedestrian, and vehicular-related deaths slightly increased with motorcycle deaths decreasing by 18 percent. The director of DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Safety states that most of these deaths could have been avoided and that many of the fatal crashes were due to bad driving habits and poor decisions.
