A drunk driver was thrown from his vehicle after he got behind the wheel after drinking at a local bar in Racine County. Witnesses at the bar say that employees called a SafeRide vehicle to take him home, but the 46 year-old man refused to get into the car. He, instead, got into his SUV and drove past employees and the SafeRide driver who were trying to prevent him from leaving.
He was driving on Highway 11 when he ran a red light and rear-ended a dump truck. The driver was not wearing his seatbelt at the time and was thrown from his vehicle. He is currently in critical condition at the hospital and will face felony DWI charges since this is his fifth drunk driving charge.

Thousands of Hondas and Subarus recalled
Posted on Wednesday, September 14th, 2011 at 1:35 pm
Honda has issued a recall on over 311,000 Pilot SUVs and Subaru is recalling over 500,000 vehicles, according to a statement by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Pilots made between 2009-2011 are being recalled for possible seatbelt malfunctions. The auto manufacturing company has stated in a news release that the stitching on the seatbelts may be incomplete or missing, which may cause the seatbelt to detach from the anchor webbing. Two reports of the seatbelt coming out are the only known instances related to the defect. No injuries or accidents have been reported.
Nearly 295,000 vehicles of Subaru’s 2002-2007 Imprezas, 2003-2008 Foresters, and 2005-2006 Saab 9-2xes are being recalled after receiving seven complaints of the drivers losing control of their vehicles, which was found to be due to the front control arm breaking. Another 195,000 2010-2011 Subaru Legacies and Outbacks are being recalled for a possible fire hazard in the models’ wiper motor.

A new program developed by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation has already shown to lower motorcycle-related deaths. THE REF, Transportable High-End Rider Education Facility, is a $300,000 federally funded program aimed to promote motorcycle safety. THE REF is a high-tech, mobile program that includes interactive tests, motorcycle simulators, and demo motorcycles.
Since THE REF’s introduction in August 2010, last year’s 62 motorcycle-related fatalities have dropped to 46. The Department of Transportation will take THE REF to five dozen cities in Wisconsin to promote awareness of motorcycle safety. Records show that an estimated 80% of riders have not undergone any motorcycle training; this program homes to lower this number.

A 48 year-old woman is behind bars after she caused a fatal pedestrian accident last week. Three teenagers were walking in the emergency lane of Highway 183 and Interstate 675 when she ran a red light and hit them. The boys were 17 and 16 years-old.
The woman is currently in jail without bond. Investigators say she was arguing with her husband on the phone at the time of the accident and under the influence of anti-depressant medication. Police conducted field sobriety tests, which she failed. The driver faces a least a dozen charges for the accident including DUI, two counts of vehicular homicide, and failure to exercise due care while on a cellphone.
Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the young victims in this accident.
