Family awarded $40 million in defective seat belt lawsuit against Kia Motors

The family of a 16-year-old Alabama girl who died in a car accident was recently awarded $40 million in a lawsuit they filed against Kia Motors for manufacturing a vehicle with a defective seat belt.

According to the lawsuit, in 2004, the 16-year-old girl was killed in a car accident while driving a Kia Sephia when her seat belt malfunctioned. Kia had recalled several models of its motor vehicles for having defective seat belts, however, the Kia Sephia had not been recalled, despite the fact that its seat belt was the same that had been found to be defective in other models.

The Kia Sephia was recalled following the accident. This lawsuit took five years to be settled and was appealed twice in the Alabama Supreme Court.
